Bloxham Village History Club

In May, Club members entertained a group from Hook Norton History Society which was a return for their hospitality last year.  Both groups enjoyed a most interesting and lively social evening to round off a successful year. The evening began in St Mary’s Church with a fascinating talk by Mrs Yvonne Huntriss on the history and architecture of the church.  The original foundation was Anglo Saxon but it was after the Norman Conquest that the church grew in size and majesty, each generation adding its bit. The visitors enjoyed going round the church to look at the details which Mrs Huntriss had mentioned – among others, a knight with a sword, a woodsman with an axe and stained glass windows by William Morris and Burne-Jones.  There were comments on the size and beauty of the church, one that is deservedly famous.
After this some people had a guided tour around the Museum to see the fine new exhibition, ‘Farm to Table’, before joining the others in the Parish Rooms for a wonderful spread provided by a team of ladies headed by Mrs Jenny Roberts. It was a happy evening, full of lively conversation, and our visitors said how much they had enjoyed themselves.
The next meeting of the History Club will be on 15 September. All details for the year will be in the September Broadsheet.

  1. I’m hoping someone can help. Was a small boy run over and killed by a bus near to the Hawk and Partridge? I think it would have been over 45 years ago.
    Thank you

  2. Reply to Ady Quartermain.
Yes a small boy was run over and killed by a bus. He was on his bike behind the bus when it reversed in by the museum to turn around. He was knocked off and the bus ran over him. His name was Derek Harbour and he lived in Merrivale lane.
