History Club Talk: Dr Johnson – 18th April 2018

Bloxham Village History Club

Wednesday 18 April, 7.30pm
Jubilee Park Hall (off Brickle Lane)
Colin Oakes:

“Dr Johnson’s Dictionary”

Samuel Johnson’s “A Dictionary of the English Language”, first published in 1755 has been described as “easily ranking as one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship” and as the work almost exclusively of one man is imprinted with its author’s acerbic and humorous views.

For example “Oats” are defined as “…a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.”

Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal in “Blackadder” of Johnson in Dictionary mode was not entirely fanciful!
All are very welcome.
Admission: free for members (£13 annual sub);
£3.00 for visitors
