Trevor Rowley

“The Battling Bishop:
Odo of Bayeux (and Deddington)”

Odo of Bayeux was the half-brother of William the Conqueror. Don’t be fooled by the “Bishop” tag; although he was Bishop of Bayeux, he was more a warrior and statesman. He was at the Battle of Hastings and was in charge of England when William was abroad. He put down rebellions and acquired vast estates. It is likely he commissioned the Bayeux tapestry.

His connection with Deddington was strong. It was one of his most valuable manors and he probably commissioned the building of the castle.

Trevor Rowley will tell his story. Trevor is an Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford and an authority on Norman England and landscape history.

All are very welcome. Admission: free for members (£10 annual sub) £2.50 for visitors.
