We almost had an Indian Summer in September although it did not last long ‘ enough to enjoy many barbecues or patio parties! 2008 in the garden has seen bumper apple crops, further restrictions on pesticides, aminopyralid poisoning of vegetables (in particular potatoes, tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots and salad vegetables.) and the usual list of failures and successes. The aminopyralid problem has affected gardens and allotments which have been contaminated by manure originating from farms where the hormone based herbicide has been sprayed on fields. It has even been carried in hay bought onto farms for feeding to cattle. The RHS advises that soil where affected crops have been grown should not have crops grown in it for a year. There does not appear to be a problem with the poison getting into the food chain although produce from soil suspected of being contaminated should not be consumed in large amounts.
\nWhilst on the subject of hygiene in the garden, it is best to obtain new plants from reputable suppliers and scrutinize all new introductions immediately on arrival to ensure that they are free from obvious signs of trouble. If possible, keep new plants in quarantine in a remote part of the garden so that symptoms of incipient trouble may develop and become apparent .Be especially careful when buying in bulbs, corms and tubers and glasshouse and house plants all of which can easily carry pests and diseases. Ensure that new plantings of bush, cane and tree fruits are healthy, preferably by planting certified stocks. Be ruthless with suspect plants and destroy them by burning or burying deeply. Don’t put infected plants on compost heaps and don’t leave infected plants in the ground longer than necessary. Always burn fruit tree prunings or get rid of them in the brown bin. Hygiene is particularly important in protected cultivation. Glasshouses should be cleaned annually with Jeyes Fluid and plant pots and boxes should be disinfected. Keeping the garden neat and tidy helps to keep down pests including slugs and snails and heaps of weeds \/prunings should not be left lying around.
