We celebrated our Ruby Anniversary this year with a holiday in Tanzania. Learning from experience, we booked a longer safari than on our previous visit to Kenya; we were not disappointed. Our first stop was in Arusha, where a guided walk round Lake Duluti provided good views of Monitor Lizard and a brief glimpse of Dik-Dik. Lake Manyara was our first game drive: Baboons, first sighting of Elephant, Giraffe, lots of Hippos and huge flocks of Yellow-billed Storks. Then we were off to Serengeti, where two memorable days in the National Park gave us one of the highlights: three young Cheetahs, sitting on a rock in the evening sunshine. Various antelope (Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelles, Eland, Im-pala, Topi and Waterbuck), Hyena, and our first sighting of Lions. These latter spend a vast amount of their time doing nothing; quite a relief, as a puncture meant we had to get out of the bus in the middle of lion country. The Ngorongoro Crater lives up to its reputation as one of the natural wonders of the world: big herds of Wildebeest, Buffalo and Zebra, distant views of Flamingoes. Our final lodge was in Tarangire National Park, rightly renowned for its Elephants. We also enjoyed our best view of Lions, who for once were doing something other than sleeping. The safari included fascinating visits to a Masai village, the archaeological site in the Olduvai Gorge, and the village of Mto Wa Mbu; its medical centre reminded us how well-provided we are in the UK. A final night at Arusha Coffee Lodge (highly recommended) preceded our flight to Zanzibar. A week on the Indian Ocean coast was a restful contrast to our busy safari schedule; we managed a visit to Stone Town (noisy, smelly but interesting), a spice farm and the Jozani Forest Reserve, where we saw Red-backed Colobus Monkeys. Our bird list came to about 130, ranging in size from Ostrich to Sunbird. We would recommend such a holiday to everyone.
