\"bloxsch24dnph\"The national press <\/a>recently carried articles about a substance, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (or 2,4-DNPH) which has been used in chemical tests\u00a0 since 1894 <\/a> and will be found in very many chemical laboratories including many schools that teach A-level chemistry.<\/p>\n

The reagent is normally supplied in moist form as it can become unstable if allowed to totally dry out.\u00a0 Recently CLEAPSS<\/a>,\u00a0 an advisory service providing support in science and technology for\u00a0 schools, reminded schools of the correct procedures for storing 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Some schools subsequently summoned the bomb squad to dispose of stocks using a controlled explosion where there was any doubt as to whether it had been stored correctly.<\/p>\n

Bloxham School decided upon\u00a0 a “better safe than sorry” approach as set out in the letter from them below.<\/p>\n

Dear neighbour,
\nYou may have seen reports in the news this week about controlled detonations taking place at a number of schools around the country to make safe a chemical called 2,4-DNP, used in\u00a0Chemistry A Level lessons.\u00a0We also have this chemical at school, and indeed have done without incident\u00a0for some 30 years.\u00a0Following recent\u00a0advice from Cleapss (the\u00a0advisory body), we contacted the police on Friday and a controlled detonation was carried out on the substance. We always store our chemicals safely and follow the advice of the experts and manufacturers.\u00a0\u00a0Last night’s action was purely precautionary. Apart from a loud bang,\u00a0it passed off without issue and we hope it did not cause concern to Bloxham villagers.
