Children arrive with a sense of anticipation at about 8.45am – it is Harvest Service today. Some are carrying boxes of fruit and vegetables that
\nare almost as big as they are – others very proudly carrying a couple of home grown apples or carrots. All are very proud of bringing a gift for somebody else.
\nThe large crocodile of children walking to church from school departs, with the oldest children accompanying the youngest, for some it is the first school visit to the St. Mary’s Church in Bloxham and the anticipation is very evident. The Harvest gifts are carefully gathered at the front of the church, making a marvellous display of produce. The fruit and vegetables grown by the school gardening club are particularly admired. By 10am the 340+ children are seated (just) in church with at least 100 parents, carers and supporters there to celebrate with us. The service begins, with the theme of water this year. The children read with great confidence and joy – a blend of both their own words and those written by others. The singing is as usual wonderfully uplifting, especially when technical failure means that they have to sing alone. Many parents comment that they were really moved when the whole school sing unaccompanied. This year the service is once again a wonderful event in the calendar of the school. A really spiritually uplifting event is how it is described to me.
\nDuring the afternoon I am lucky enough to show some prospective new parents round the school. They are very impressed by the calmness of the children and just how involved they are with their learning. They admire the new statue (perhaps not so new now!) and the other artwork in and around school. As soon as the normal school day ends, the after school activities begin. This being Thursday there is gardening club, choir and Keep Fit clubs taking place. Children, accompanied by both parents and staff, are tending crops and tidying the school garden, whilst some are singing in preparation for a big school concert to be held in Birmingham, and others, along with some members of staff, are running up Hobb Hill before returning to school.
\nIn the evening the Friends of Bloxham Primary School AGM takes place. We are very lucky that we have many parents who are willing to give up their time to support us in this way and once again at the meeting all the officer posts are filled, after only a little cajoling! The group record their successes of the past year, including extra funding for special needs, phonics resources, leavers books as well as supporting children on both year 5 and year 6 residential visits. The planning of the various events both fund-raising and otherwise begins with not a little humour. Primary schools are a special place to be.
