I thought I ought to explain to the village what is happening with the Church Clock. It was made in 1880 so has been going for 146 years. Tim Hart and I look after it.<\/p>\n

\"\"Recently it stopped, and we found it was because the teeth on a very large gear wheel had worn down on one side.<\/p>\n

It obviously needed a new gear wheel made, but this would mean the clock being stopped for a long time, (and finding over \u00a31000 to pay for it!) We tried various methods to get it going again without success, and it was stopped for about 20 months. As a last resort, we turned the wheel round back to front, so it was using the unworn side of the teeth, and it worked! So the clock is now going again, and it will give us time to get a new gearwheel made.<\/p>\n

We also have other problems. It is no use having the clock working if you can’t read the time! The hands and figures on the dials need re-gilding with gold leaf. I’ve had one estimate so far of over \u00a39000!<\/p>\n

Additionally, there are one or two residents in the village who have bought houses near the Church and who have complained about the clock’s chiming. They want it silenced every night. Since we got it going again quite a few people have congratulated us and said how nice it is to hear the clock chiming again. It seems to me that it would be democratic to listen to the majority, and not have the clock silenced because of a few complaints!<\/p>\n

It would be very interesting to know the thoughts of Bloxham residents on how they value the clock as a community asset, its place in village heritage and its chime which, to some people, is a useful reminder of the time of day when out and about in the village.<\/p>\n
