Despite working for a Canadian company for nearly 40 years, Peter had never had a holiday there until May of last year, when he visited the woodland areas of Ontario. This was largely in an area between Lakes Ontario and Huron to the west of Toronto. The land is generally flat, with no high hills or mountains. There is a mixture of coniferous and deciduous forest and some areas are very wet with swampy woodland. There is a continental type climate, with warm summers and very wet winters – and prevalence of mosquitoes and black flies in May! The influence of beavers is everywhere as they dam the rivers, giving rise to flooding. Their lodges have underwater entrances and they leave dying trees in open areas. The beaver also eat the sedges which line the river banks.
Peter showed many slides of the flora of the area, too numerous to list, but among the more spectacular are trillium grandiflorum and swathes of Red Indian Paintbrush. Chipmunks, butterflies, dragonflies, white tailed deer and snakes abound in the area. We moved onto the Bruce peninsula where there is granite, stony areas around the lakes. The rarest of the Lady’s Slipper Orchid grows here, among many other plants. On to the Great Lakes to Tobermory, then up to Flowerpot Island, which is a limestone stack. There are turtles and many frogs in the wet fen areas. Around the lakes near Killarney and on the Bruce Peninsula there are black bears, also racoons and lots of water birds – the star being the Great Northern Diver (the ‘loon’) carrying their young on their backs. The Killarrney area is very open and wet, with woodland and many species of flowers. Finally we went into the Algonquin National park, where there is only one through road and the only way into the interior is by canoe (carrying them from lake to lake). This is an area of coniferous woodland where many plants grow, including orchids and where beaver and dragonflies abound.
What an interesting trip – and what wonderful slides of the local flora and fauna.
We look forward to another talk from Roger Smith on 23rd March, this time on the National Plant Collection.
Visitors are welcome at 8.00pm in the Parish Rooms

At their first meeting on the New Year on 26th January, members were taken on another fascinating trip by our chairman, Peter Sheasby, this time […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[5
26
post-995","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-clubs-and-societies","tag-issue-329
"1536x1536":false,"2048x2048":false
featured@2x":false
featured-fixed@2x":false
featured-cat@2x":false
single-featured@2x":false
At their first meeting on the New Year on 26th January, members were taken on another fascinating trip by our chairman, Peter Sheasby, this time […]
["GET
