Back in 2015/16 The Bloxham Neighbourhood Plan pointed out the inadequacy of the A361 and the fact it’s accident rate placed it amongst the most dangerous stretches of road in the UK
The good news is that Oxfordshire County Council have now received received £4.135m from government to deliver agreed A361 road safety improvements by 31st March 2020.
Key changes that will be brought about by this project to reduce the likelihood and impact of accidents, include:
- Vegetation clearance
- Carriageway re-surfacing
- Reduced speed limits
- Improved junctions at Bloxham Grove Road and Wykham Lane
- Improved road markings and signage
- Improved drainage
- New safety fencing south of South Newington
- Improved footway for all users
The bad news is – no gain without pain!
You can ‘look forward to roadworks at various points between Banbury and Chippie.
Although the bulk of the work is likely to take place in 2019 preparative work may start as soon as next week with more significant work in late November 2018.
I’m afraid we don’t have any details from OCC Highways of the proposed work schedules or likely impact – but be prepared to spend longer than usual listening to the car radio over the next 18 months!

Well – that’s certainly the line developers take when asked for money to improve them 🙂
If you drive it regularly and know where the hazards are you can adapt your driving but – given the accident rate – it’s surely hard to argue there isn’t something problematic about the Wykham Lane Junction that catches drivers out just that bit too often?
