The next episode of Channel 4 Dispatches – Monday Mon 25 Jul, 8pm – is titled “How School Bosses Spend Your Millions.”
It is about the fact that billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money go into the academy school system. Given this, Dispatches has investigated the finances of academies, and discovered big salaries and generous expenses. Apparently, one of the schools featured is Banbury Academy.
Banbury Academy has not fared well in recent school inspections and parental concerns have been prominent in the local press of late. The most recent Ofsted report this June (available by clicking here) notes every one of the assessed areas requires improvement. It will be interesting to see the use to which government funding has been put in attempts to address this reported underachievement there.

Apologies. Because the process of seeking planning permission for residential development of land behind the old Stanbridge Hall commenced over 3 years ago(in February 2013) and was given permission to proceed over 2 years ago (in April 2014) – coupled with the fact that the decision imposed a condition that development commence not later than two years from the final approval of the reserved matters – we wrongly assumed the Academy would be well beyond still seeking a land sale. We should have checked that this was the case. Again – apologies for the error. We hope that the monies will, as you say, ‘allow improvements elsewhere on the campus.’ We wish you well in your new role as Chair of Governors.

I’m the new chair of governors at Banbury Academy and keen to keep the local community in touch with the school, as is our new Campus Principal Sylvia Thomas. Just one note, in a previous piece, you mentioned a piece of land that we are hoping to sell. This has not yet gone through, but is still an ongoing project which we hope will allow improvements elsewhere on the campus.
