On 27th April Janet Cropley paid a return visit speaking on ‘Cottage Gardens’. Members were treated to another of her very entertaining presentations, illustrated by excellent slides of plants growing in her own garden at Hill Grounds, Evenley.
The cottage garden is typically English in concept with a simple, trouble-free and unsophisticated style of gardening. There is less grass, but more plants – emulating gardens of old, with bold clumps of any one plant and small shrubs. Concentrating on herbaceous plants, Janet described the merits of the perennials growing in her own garden, both in dry sunny sites, and in light or deep shade.
Evening outings Three evening outings are planned during the summer. Non-members are very welcome to come on these occasions, starting from the Elephant and Castle at 6.30pm. Travel is in member’s cars.
- Monday 1st June 6.30pm: The old Rectory Mixbury: Cost £4.00
- Tuesday 30th June: 6.30pm: Swalcliffe Lea House – a mature terraced garden (See Yellow Book) Cost £2.50 plus (if required) £1.50 for tea and cake.
- Monday 20th July 6.30pm: Tadmarton Manor – Old established 2!/a acre garden (See Yellow Book): Cost £2.50.
The autumn season begins on 28th September at 8.00pm in the Parish Rooms with Duncan Coombs talking on Bulbs for a Spring Display. All welcome to attend.

Good afternoon,
I wanted to share with you the details of an open garden event in Radway and would be very grateful if you could share the details with your gardening club members.
On Saturday 6 June, the garden at Radway Grange will be open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to visit this stunning private garden with parterre, stumpery, topiary lawn, lake and areas of woodland. Renowned 18th-century architect and landscape designer, Sanderson Miller, created a landscape park around the house and his influence can still be seen today in the picturesque layout and historic character of the grounds.
We will also be selling plants, handmade crafts and delicious homemade teas, with all proceeds going to the Radway Church roof restoration fund.
