17th September 2008 – Stories of Oxford Castle,
The new season opens with a stirring account of dungeons and dunghills by speaker Mark Davies. The history of Oxford castle is interwoven with that of its waterways. Many colourful characters were imprisoned within the castle walls and these stories of escape, hard labour, transportation and execution expose the harsh social and political conditions of life for many in the 18th century.
During June and July club members enjoyed several excellent outings, We had an afternoon in Chipping Campden and visited the Court Barn Museum which has many beautiful exhibits celebrating the work of some leading members of the Arts and Crafts movement. One evening was spent at Tooley’s Boatyard where we had a fascinating tour round and a trip up the canal. Our whole day visit was to Belvoir Castle, where we nearly got blown away by a great gale but thoroughly en-1 joyed ourselves.
Meetings are at the Jubilee Park Hall every third Wednesday I at 8pm. Membership costs £10. Visitors are very welcome, entry £2.50. For further information contact the Secretary, Jill Puckering.
