Predictions about the length and depth of the recession are worrying and I fear this is going to be rather different from previous ones. Economic projections make it clear that the South East cannot expect to be recession-proofed. In fact, it looks as if much of the South East, including Oxfordshire, could see rising unemployment and a slow recovery. It is important we do not talk ourselves into a worse economic condition but it is also important that there is realism in what faces us. I also fear that this recession looks likely to impact more broadly than previously with unemployment affecting people who may have no previous experience of claiming benefits or of the consequences of being out of work.
I am working closely with Tony Baldry to launch a Banbury Job Club to provide support and advice to all affected by the recession. This will have been launched by us at The Mill early in January and the first full Job Club will be held on Friday 30 January at The Mill on this and succeeding Fridays.
The County Council is also looking at funding for advice agencies across the county. It is already clear that their debt and benefit advice services will be under pressure and I hope we can make a modest increase in our funding of them. The County Council and Cherwell District Council are working closely with local businesses to identify trends and to be able to respond promptly and effectively so as to help people through challenging times.
