We now number over 30 walkers of all shapes and sizes and four leaders (three trained) and in September we celebrate the second anniversary of the Bloxham Health Walk Group. There is a weekly short, flat walk of approximately one mile and a longer walk of 3 to 4.1/2 miles, all in local countryside. The Group is quite
innovative, having formed a list of 18 varying routes.
After the weekly leg stretch, refreshments are served at Bloxham Baptist Church or on some walks we may stop en-route at a pub for beverages; very popular are the occasional pub lunches after a walk.
To explain the roots of ‘Walking the Way to Health’ here is an extract taken from the official Newsletter for ‘Volunteer Health Walk Leaders’ of April 2008. ‘Walking the Way to Health (WHI) is the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks. It is a joint initiative between Natural England
and the British Heart Foundation. WHI has helped to create over 525 local health walk schemes and has trained more than 30,000 volunteer walk leaders. Since 2000, it is estimated that we ‘ve encouraged over a million people to walk more. ‘
Do take a look at their website for details www.whi.org.uk Not only are many of us encouraged to walk, but also the activity of health walks can only be an excellent source of economy for the NHS!
Meet us on Wednesdays at 10.30am outside Bloxham Surgery. (Please do not park at the Surgery)
