Film Night: rare documentary “shorts”

on a variety of historical topics

Bring your popcorn for another History Club film night! Following the  successful formula of our Film Night last year this will be an evening of  interest and variety sure to generate memories and discussion – something for everyone!

A remarkable short film from 1938 will examine the build-up at the time of France’s defences against the German threat, including extraordinary  footage of the Maginot Line and its staggering underground complex,  built to accommodate one million personnel.

Tapping into the current controversy around accelerated housebuilding we’ll go back to look at the rationale and early-years’ experience of the  New Towns: Harlow in 1956 and Milton Keynes in 1968.

And finally, we’ll see an engaging short film about the hair-raising and  perilous conditions for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians on the roads of  Oxford in 1953, which might cause you to (favourably) reassess  road-user behaviour now!

Contact Ian Myson (ian_myson@hotmail.com) for further  information. All welcome.
