JOHN BURTON PHILLIPS 19.11.1933 – 18.10.2017
In his favourite church, a host of friends and family came together to remember someone who has had a great influence on so many people.
Although John Phillips came from Kent, he spent a very great part of his life in Oxfordshire, and until he retired was working with Alcan – once the biggest company in Banbury.

As a youngster he became a chorister at Canterbury cathedral, and showed his bent for leadership by becoming head chorister. This association with music and the church lasted all his life.
Early days at Kings School followed by National Service and University were greatly influenced by his love of sport; both cricket and rugby were major occupations, and he represented Oxford University for cricket and never lost this interest.
He also played in many first class matches with famous players such as Colin Cowdray, Fred Truman and others.

When posted by Alcan to Newport, he became a keen supporter of the town’s rugger club, and on return posting to Banbury continued his involvement with the Banbury rugger club, though still maintaining his interest in cricket.

On retirement he was able to switch his energies to golf.

He found time for many other activities, being a keen Rotarian, becoming President in l991/2, and he and his wife Jean played a full role in this organisation.
In Bloxham he was chairman of the museum, treasurer for the Bloxham Broadsheet and governor of both the Warriner School and Banbury Technical College.
For his good humour, friendliness, and hard work in so many areas of life he will be much missed by all who knew him and our deepest sympathy goes to Jean and the family at this time.
