Why are some fields ridged? Well – there are 3 reasons:*
- The chief reason is that these fellows wanted to create as much cultivable area as they could, so they threw up a ridge sometimes up to 5 feet (150cm) high. You can imagine that a strip of land thrown up would give a much greater cultivable area.
- It was done to assist drainage.
- To define one man’s strip from another.

Ridge and furrow fields can be found at Warriner School. A good example is along Bloxham grove immediately after the tennis courts. There are other examples on the School’s farmland. Chris Holloway would be quite helpful.5
