Oxfordshire County Council wants to make our built environments safer and more attractive places to walk and cycle. To enable this, 20mph speed restrictions are being used to help promote alternative modes of transport for local travel.
We’re therefore asking for your views on the proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit throughout Bloxham, replacing the majority of the existing 30mph speed limit within the residential areas in the process. The proposals are being put forward following road safety concerns raised by the parish council.
Your response should be completed and returned by 5pm on Friday 26 May 2023.

Outside peak times, when the traffic congestion is high, Speeding through the village and especially along the A361 is very common. I guess this was the reason for the speed camera opposite the Joiners Arms.
Cars speeding are one thing, but heavy lorries travelling along the A361, even at 30mph, can be intimidating when walking along the narrow paths. This is especially so considering we have two secondary schools, a doctor’s surgery, a care home, a day care nursery, a church and a museum along a very busy stretch of road.
In these days of encouraging walking and cycling around our towns and villages, reducing the speed to 20mph, would make it far less intimidating on the narrow roads and busy through road of Bloxham
The distance through the village along the A361 is approximately 1.3 miles. Going from 30mph to 20 mph on this stretch would mean the time taken to travel from one end of the village to the other would go from 2 minutes and 36 seconds to 3 minutes and 54 seconds, so a total increase of 1 minute 18 seconds. This seems a very small price to pay.
At most times there is little possibility of reaching let alone exceeding 20mph through Bloxham: almost perpetual congestion ensures that.
Consequently it concerns me that the main outcome might be Bloxham residents helping to fill the coffers of OCC with fines for doing 25mph at 10:00 in the evening whilst achieving minimal daytime safety improvements.
I appreciate the very fact it’s been raised means there are numerous others who judge differently.
