“Banbury Stockyard and My Life as an Auctioneer”

Banbury Stockyard, also known as Banbury Cattle Market, was until it closed in 1998 – a major regional trading centre for livestock. It was for a time the largest livestock market in the UK, with animals brought from all over England and Wales, and one of the largest in Europe. In addition to being a meeting place and social centre for farmers, it was an important ingredient in the identity of the town.

Brian Pile, now of Ells Farm on the edge of Bloxham, has a great story to tell about this hugely significant Banbury institution, having spent many years there as an auctioneer, as well as working in livestock markets at Henley in Arden and Northampton, prior to retiring in 2019.
