Many newer residents may be unaware of the history on their doorstep in the form of the Barford St John airbase.
As well as being an RAF training facility it has been a bomber Command airfield and the test base for Brtains first jet aircraft before becoming a satellite of RAF Upper Heyford in the 1950s.
Older residents will recall F111 bombers flying over the base and at least some will have been aware of the peaks and troughs in communication activity from the base as the world situation ebbed and flowed!

Always wondered where opening shots of 12o/c High were filmed? Have lived in Banbury now for 43 years. Just found out by accident. Opening shots are my most treasured memories. They really stirred me, still today, recently bought dvd to watch again just for that scene, where he stands on empty runway, then the sounds of aircraft engines, magic!
I remember the F111 Aardvarks flying over Bloxham when I was a pupil at All Saints School in the mid- late-70s. During cricket matches, it was ‘traditional’ for wicket keepers to use the air cover provided by the racket of the low-flying F111s to make outrageous ‘caught behind’ appeals as the noise masked the ‘snick’ of an edged ball. I saw appeals for deliveries several feet wide.
