Ciarán Walsh:
“The Fight against Fascism in Oxford”
Just as the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza in our day have mobilised global opinion, so too the rise of Fascism and the conflicts it provoked and influenced were front-of-mind for the politically aware in the inter-war period of the Twentieth Century. Related tensions were acute in Oxford, for example in local and student politics and engagement with the Spanish Civil War. The so-called “Battle of Carfax” (1936) saw notable violence involving the British Union of Fascists and opponents. Ciarán Walsh is a local historian and poetry performer who specialises in working class history and the history of radical social movements.
